Essay – what can Indonesia do to raise awareness of autism?
Autism is become a global issue in the world, including Indonesia. However, many people still do not know about it. However, we, as a good and caring society, together with government, have to build awareness in this country regarding to prevent and help autism people. The three main things to raise awareness of autism in Indonesia are seminar or talk show, publications in electronic media and posters in public areas.
First of all, we could hold seminars and talk shows to raise people’s awareness. The event should be held in offices, campuses and hospitals. This public places represent three models of society which are career persons, young people and hold house parents. The event also should have a qualified speaker such a psychologist, doctors or teachers that has experience in interaction to autism sufferer. Last but not least, when we held the event, we should target the audience. We could invite from, as written above, offices, campuses and hospitals. We should re-consider the target, because with the wrong target, the information could not be delivered.
Another thing to raise autism awareness in Indonesia is publication in electronic media such as TV and radio. The show might include opinion from autism sufferer. This could increase people awareness because mostly, people will give more notice to opinion from the direct sufferer, to know the sufferer’s feelings. Also, this opinion could give awareness to people to take care about their children, on how to prevent their child from autism. People also could be given advice to not ignoring the autism sufferer, because it is not their wish to be an autism sufferer. Lastly, when the show is prepared well, we should on air it at primetime, so many people could watch or hear the show and the information will well delivered.
The last thing, putting posters in public areas also could raise people’s awareness in autism. Firstly, we should research about autism and compare the systems for handling autism inside and outside country. Mostly, each country have a different system because they have different circumstances and culture, so the method to teach and train autism sufferer also different. Then, when we already collect the best information, we could add it at an “eye-catching” posters layout to attract people to read. The last thing to do is to stick it in easy-to-see place, or give it to people in the public place. It is cheap but has a big function. Posters are easy to keep and people could re-read it anytime.
Finally, with seminar, news on electronic media and posters in public areas, we could make people aware about autism. Autism sufferer is not an enemy, they are friends. Autism is enemy. We have to fight it for the future sake. Without autism, Indonesia will have a better quality of society. So, people awareness must be raised in order to prevent and reduce autism.
